ADHD’s Leveling Tool is a tube compression emulation in the style of the LA-2A compressor, an analog studio classic for compressing vocals due to its subtle, slow gain reduction and overall transparent sound. But I find that it also sounds great when used on mix elements such as bass and keyboards. The ADHD Leveling Tool tames instrument peaks and adds colorful character with its emulated tube drive. The release and attack time can be adjusted to suit your needs, which adds to this compressor’s versatility.

When you’ve got something to offer (a big ol’ crowd filled with fans, friends and family, or a new release under your belt), local venues are sure to take notice. By keeping the needs, expectations, and limitations of the venues and promoters you reach out to, you’ll have the best chance of getting booked.

Known as “the kiss heard round the world” during Madonna’s mashup performance of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood” at the 2003 VMAs, something pretty unexpected happened when all three divas were onstage together. The three-way kiss. Just look at that quick cut to Spears’ ex-boyfriend, a young Justin Timberlake, and watch his awkward reaction. Yup, that’s how everyone felt. It’s still weird to watch this after so many years.

As it turns out, when Lang heard Ischi do his thing, he was so impressed that he took him under his wing. Think about that for a second. That would be like a kid obsessing over Wilco albums, getting really good at writing songs, and eventually getting the chance to be mentored by Jeff Tweedy.

“The Luv Pack, Vol. 1,” is comprised of samples created by producer, drummer, bandleader, and author of Soundfly’s The Art of Hip-Hop Production course, Charles Burchell. As a bass player, I have been lucky enough to play a little with Charles over the years, and it has always been an instant hook up for me. His pocket is on another level and given that his raw playing features heavily in the source material for these samples, I knew I could get inspired by digging into the drum loops first.

Once you’ve got your sound dialed in, you’re ready to start getting creative. Keep in mind, these bass lines are simple — they’re not going to have the same fluidity and movement as the electric bass lines we looked at on the previous page.

The relationship between typography and music isn’t always talked about, but if a band makes use of some identifiably unique typography or linguistic symbols, you’d know right away who the artist was if you saw a piece of unnamed promotional material. The best examples of typography can even go so far as to tell an audience what genre of music a band plays, without you even having to listen to them.

You might have promising music and loads of enthusiasm, but none of that matters much when you’re on stage for the first time and don’t know what to expect. Building performance experience can also give you more confidence and credibility throughout the booking process, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Artists live and work on the island for two to four weeks and engage directly with the landscape, “responding to notions of conservation, ecology, and sustainability via their research and cultural practices.” Musicians are welcome to apply.

The group was formed in 1966 by Mingiedi Mawangu, a member of the Zombo tribe. He began his musical career transcribing traditional Zombo music that was originally played by an ensemble of horns made from elephant tusks to be played on likembé. While he played with many different ensembles, it was his album, Congotronics (named after the way he’d jerry-rig different electronics together to make working parts) that eventually afforded him his international acclaim. In 2010, the band collaborated with Herbie Hancock on The Imagine Project and earned their first Grammy.

If you’ve spent a bit of time learning about rhythm patterns and how to compose or arrange in different time signatures, at some point you have probably come across the term hemiola. Hemiola is a unique-sounding technique than can give any rhythm a syncopated, off-the-beat feel.

Using the guitar fretboard as a template, music theorist Dean Olivet has redesigned harmonic notation in a colorful, intuitive methodology for learning.

The building block of serialism is the 12-tone “row” in which all chromatic notes are articulated in an order chosen by the composer. The row can then be developed in several different ways. For example, inversion flips the vertical structure of the row (an inverted row will descend if it ascended before); retrograde motion plays the row in reverse.

After mapping out the framework between the chords, bass, and drum loops, I found a perfect vocal loop to sneak into this track. That’s Kim Mayo’s (of The Love Experiment and Moonheart) incredible and undeniably unique voice first sampled at 0:22.
